Is a Toothache Considered a Dental Emergency?

A toothache rarely tells you exactly what’s going on. It might come from decay reaching the nerve, a cracked tooth, gum disease, or an abscess forming near the root. Sometimes, the tooth isn’t even the culprit, as sinus pressure can cause pain that feels like it’s coming from your upper back teeth.

The pain might build gradually over a few days or wake you up in the middle of the night. Either way, the question is usually the same: can it wait, or do you need to call the dentist?

Managing the Pain at Home

For mild symptoms, try holding a cold compress against your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Avoid chewing on the sore side, particularly very hot, cold, or sugary foods.

If they’re suitable for you, paracetamol or ibuprofen may help with discomfort when taken according to the packet directions. A warm salt water rinse may also soothe the area, while sleeping with your head slightly elevated can sometimes make throbbing less noticeable.

These measures may make you more comfortable, but they won’t address what’s causing the toothache. A dental check can help identify the problem and what, if any, treatment is needed.

When It’s a Dental Emergency

Some symptoms call for prompt attention rather than waiting to see what happens:

• Severe or worsening throbbing pain or pressure in the tooth or jaw
• Swelling in your face, cheek, or gums
• Fever or feeling generally unwell alongside tooth pain
• A bad taste in your mouth or pus near the sore tooth
• Trouble breathing, swallowing, or opening your mouth
